A Cardiff tale – life at the Office for National Statistics

I work as an Assistant Economist in the Office for National Statistics (ONS), as part of the Civil Service Fast Stream. I have worked on a number of analytical projects, including co-leading work on calculating inflation rates for different sub-groups of the population. The published article was the first UK-based work on the topic, and it was really exciting to be involved in!

We have an active Fast Stream community here at ONS and I help to organise talks from senior civil servants. We are also currently organising the very first Welsh Fast Stream conference. This event aims to improve the network of fast streamers across the region, of which there are quite a few!

I am now in my second post and my day-to-day work includes a lot of qualitative research, with the aim of providing evidence to support the classifications of units, transactions and assets within the UK National Accounts. It’s a good contrast to my first post which was focused on quantitative research, and has helped me develop a broader set of competency examples to support my future career progression.

The ONS is a great place to work as there is a wide variety of posts available, and plenty of opportunities for promotion. There is also a good network of government departments around the area. A lot of fast streamers live in Cardiff, which has all the benefits of a capital city but without the cost of London! We are also spoilt for choice about what to do on weekends: we have the beautiful Brecon Beacons on our doorstop but if the capital does call, we're only a 2 hour train journey from London Paddington.
