Have you heard about the new Fast Stream offer for Statisticians starting in September 2016? As Head of Profession for Statistics in HMRC I am really pleased to be the sponsor for this developing initiative.
You’ll start the Fast Stream as an Assistant Statistician and emerge from the 4 year managed programme as a substantive Senior Executive Officer ready for promotion, with the skills, experience and aspirations to take leadership roles across the Civil Service.
So how will it work?
For the first two years you’ll undertake two specialist 12-month placements in two different government departments.
At mid-point you’ll go on to have two 6 month placements which will be a bit different; one placement will be outside the Civil Service in the private or third sector and the other will be to a non-analytical role such as in policy, projects or even in a Private Office.
In the fourth and final year you’ll undertake another specialist post in a third department. Over the course of the four years you’ll grow and develop through a range of core training courses, optional courses, cross-profession learning groups and other activities. We’re also working with the Royal Statistical Society and hoping to offer a formal accreditation to all those who complete the scheme.
On successful completion of the 4 year programme you’ll be allocated permanently to a department.
The benefits are that you’ll have developed a breadth of experience through working in at least 4 different organisations. Through the training and networking opportunities available you’ll have developed strong links across the different Civil Service professions and because of this you’ll feel invested in the work and ready to hit the ground running when you successfully complete the scheme.
I’m really excited about the new opportunities available to our new fast streamers and believe it will help them kick start their future career in the GSS and beyond.
