Commercial capability is a high priority
Now is a great time to join the Civil Service in a commercial role. Commercial capability is a high priority, as the Chief Executive of the Civil Service, John Manzoni, recently pointed out in this YouTube video.
The Commercial Fast Stream aims to give you the skill-set and experiences required to be an influential and successful leader within the Civil Service. With support through further qualifications, a competitive salary, and an incomparable variety of experiences in multiple departments on high profile projects, there are so many reasons why the Fast Stream is ranked fifth in The Times Top 100 Graduate Employers.
“So much to gain”
Personal development and further qualifications are a big part of the Commercial Fast Stream. Qualifications can be earned through the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCS – the free online learning service) and qualifications organised by the Fast Stream. Commercial Fast Streamer Amber (currently with the Crown Commercial Service) enjoys the opportunity for further learning;
“There is so much to gain through the training and development opportunities – for example, studying to complete the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) qualification – they are a real advantage of the programme.”
“Always exciting, challenging and stretching”
Commercial Fast Streamer Andrew, currently a Policy Advisor for the Cabinet Office, said;
“I joined the Commercial Fast Stream because it offers a chance to get involved with the rapidly developing areas around government commercial, with some of the best opportunities in the civil service. Commercial is always exciting, challenging and stretching because it always has a role in the most difficult challenges faced by government, this makes it a central part of policy, decision making and operations to tackle issues across the UK.”
Long term prospects
The experiences you gain from day one will put you on the pathway to the senior civil service. Tina’s first placement on the Submarine Production Team with the Ministry of Defence led to a spectacular day very early on in her career;
“The most enjoyable and interesting day in my first month was visiting our main supplier, BAE Systems. Armed with a protective hard hat, overalls and boots, I was given a tour around the building yard to see Boats 4 and 5 being constructed. This was an incredible experience and seeing the submarines in real life really gave me a sense of the importance of my work.”
The incredible opportunities you are exposed to on the Commercial Fast Stream could be like any of the following Fast Streamers:
- Alexandra’s work with the Ministry of Justice saw her take on responsibilities relating to an estimated value of £24million contracts in only her second week
- Hasan was introduced to his desk on his first day and to Senior Management of Rolls Royce on his second day through his work with the Foreign Office
- Mariella would love to tell you what she does but her work with the Ministry of Defence is strictly confidential!
